CTET – An Outlook

What is CTET? CTET, short name for Central Teacher Eligibility Test, is an exam which is conducted every year in India, in accordance with the Guidelines framed by the NCTE, to be recruit candidates eligible for appointment in any of the schools in India. The Central Board of Secondary Education has been entrusted by The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India to conduct this course every year and it is for those intending to teach students of class I to VIII.

Purpose of CTET Exam

The underlying principle behind conducting this exam is simple. It creates a benchmark of teacher quality in the recruitment process by inducing interested candidates to improve their standards of performance. As a result, a national standard of quality education is maintained in the country.

Eligibility Criteria for CTET – Academic Qualification

CTET exam is comprised of two stages – Primary Stage (for classes I to V) and Elementary Stage (for classes VI to VIII).

  • Eligibility Criteria for becoming teacher for Classes I to V (Primary Stage)
  • Senior Secondary or its equivalent with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in final year of 2- year Diploma in Elementary Education (by whatever name known)

OR

  • Senior Secondary or its equivalent with at least 45% marks and passed or appearing in final year of 2- year Diploma in Elementary Education (by whatever name known), in accordance with the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure), Regulations, 2002.

OR

  • Senior Secondary or its equivalent with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in final year of 4- year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed).

OR

  • Senior Secondary or its equivalent with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in final year of 2- year Diploma in Education (Special Education).

OR

  • Graduation with at least 50% marks and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed)
  • A Graduate degree and passed in or appearing in final year of 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education;

A Graduate degree with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in 1-year Bachelor in Education (B.Ed);

OR

  • A Graduate degree with at least 45% marks and passed or appearing in 1-year Bachelor in Education (B.Ed);

OR

  • Senior Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in final year of 4-year Bachelor in Elementary Education (B.El.Ed);

OR

  • Senior Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in final year of 4-year B.A/B.Sc. Ed or B.A.-Ed/B.Sc.Ed; or Graduation with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in 1-year B.Ed (Special Education)

The candidate who does not have any of the above qualifications shall not be eligible for appearing in the Central Teacher Eligibility Test. However, a relaxation of up to 5% in the qualifying marks in the minimum Educational Qualification for eligibility shall be allowed to the candidates belonging to reserved categories, such as SC/ST/OBC/Differently abled.

Eligibility Criteria for CTET – Age and other parameters

  • The applicant must be a citizen of India
  • There is no restriction of age, however, the candidate must have attained minimum 17 years of age
  • There is no restriction regarding the number of attempts an aspirant can appear for CTET

Exam Schedule

A candidate who is eligible for CTET has to check the official website for the opening date of online registration. Generally, it opens in the month of August while the exam is carried out in the month of October or December. The exam is comprised of two papers I and II, each of two and a half hours duration. Results are declared and statement mark sheets along with certificates are issued within six months from the date of the exam.

Structure and Content (All Compulsory):

(i) Child Development and Pedagogy                  30 MCQs                     30 Marks

(ii) Language I (compulsory)                                 30 MCQs                     30 Marks

(iii) Language II (compulsory)                              30 MCQs                     30 Marks

(iv) Mathematics                                                     30 MCQs                     30 Marks

(v) Environmental Studies                                     30 MCQs                     30 Marks

CTET Syllabus for Paper II (for Classes VI to VIII) Elementary Stage:

Duration of examination – Two-and-a-half hours

Structure and Content (All Compulsory):

(i) Child Development & Pedagogy (compulsory)      30 MCQs   30 Marks

(ii) Language I (compulsory)                                       30 MCQs       30 Marks

(iii) Language II (compulsory)                                     30 MCQs      30 Marks

(iv) Mathematics and Science                                     60 MCQs        60 Marks

Note

Candidates who score 60% or more marks in the exam will be considered as TET pass. However, CBSE or CTET unit does not promise, guarantee or assure the provision of any type of employment whatsoever.
