Teachers have been playing an important role in the formation of society.  Teaching is considered a noble profession since the dawn of civilization. Former President Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam once said, “Teaching is a very noble profession that shapes the character, caliber, and future of an individual. If the people remember me as a good teacher, that will be the biggest honor for me.” These words show how important this profession is.

You cannot deny the importance of the teacher’s role in students’ lives. In today’s time, education has become one of the basic necessities. The importance of education has created many jobs for teachers and if you want to have your career in this field then you will find good scope in the education industry now and in near future.

Teaching is a great profession for those who want to share their knowledge with the young generation and do not want to spend extensive hours on their work. You will have to have some fundamental qualities and educational qualifications to be a teacher. You also need to pass some entrance exams in order to be a teacher.

Required Qualifications to be a Teacher   

To be a teacher you must have the degree of B. Ed (Bachelors in Education) which is offered by almost all the universities across the country. To get in-depth knowledge, you can also do the Masters in Education (M. Ed). Along with B. Ed or M. Ed, you need to have complete knowledge of your subject. A Bachelors degree in your subject always helps you in the journey of becoming a teacher. 

· Teacher Training Courses

A few teachers’ training courses can also help you to be a teacher. These courses are as follows; Basic Training Certificate (BTC), Diploma in Education (D.Ed) and Teacher Training Certificate (TTC). If you have the aforementioned certificate and diplomas, then you can apply to be a teacher in private schools to apply for government teachers’ vacancies, you need to pass some entrance exams.

As we have mentioned above that to be a teacher you need to clear some entrance exams along with required educational qualification.  Here are a few entrance exams that you will have to pass to get the job of a teacher in government and well reputed private schools. Let’s know about them.

Entrance Exam to be a Teacher

  Following are the entrance exams that a teacher aspirant needs to pass to be a teacher.   

· TET

Teachers Eligibility Test, popularly known as TET is the entrance exam for the teachers conduct by the state governments and the central government. TET exam is conducted into two levels.

  1. TET Level 1 is conducted for the Primary Teacher (Class I to V) aspirants.
  2. TET Level 2 is conducted for the candidates who want to be a Secondary Teacher (Class VI to VIII).

If a candidate wants, then he can appear in both of the levels of TET exams. State governments conduct the TET exam every year or once in two years and some states conduct this exam twice in a year too.  Let’s know more about the TET exam conducted by the central government, popularly known as CTET and TET exam conducted by the state government, known as STET.

· CTET (Central Level Teachers Eligibility Test)

To qualify for central government or private schools, you will have to clear the CTET exam. This is a teacher’s eligibility exam conducted by the central government. If you clear this exam then you can apply in KVS, NVS, Central Tibetan Schools, etc and schools under the administrative control of UT’s of Chandigarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and NCT of Delhi.  Private schools also welcome the teachers who have cleared the CTET.

 To receive a CTET certificate, you need to score more than 60% marks in CTET 2019. This exam conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), twice in a year.  The CTET exam has two papers; Paper I and Paper II for Primary and elementary teachers respectively.

· STET (State Level Teachers Eligibility Test)

STET exam is conducted by the different states of India. States can conduct the TET exam as per their requirements; it can be twice in a year or once in two years. The pattern of STET is quite similar to CTET. In STET also two papers are included; Paper I for Primary teacher and Paper II for the elementary teacher. Schools owned and managed by the State Government/local bodies and aided schools preferred a candidate with a TET certificate from state government organized exam.  

· NET (National Eligibility Test)

If you want to take up a teaching job in a university or college or want to pursue your career in research then UGC NET will be the most suitable exam for you. To appear in UGC NET exam, you need to complete your Master’s degree course in any subject with at least 55% marks from any UGC-recognised university.   CBSE conducts the UGC NET exam in more than 80 subjects in 90 cities spread across India. 

· SET (State Level Eligibility Test)

SET is another entrance test that can offer you a job of lecturer within the jurisdiction of the Member-States of this SLET Commission. The SET exam is conducted in all the states of India but not all the universities take a candidate with the SET certificate on board. Only a few universities welcome a SET certifies professors.
