UPSC conducts the Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam twice in a year. The CDS (I) exam is going to conduct in February 2019 and CDS (II) exam is scheduled to be conducted in the month of September 2019.  For the candidates who want to appear in CDS (II) exam, it’s essential to have the detailed information about CDS (II) 2019 syllabus and Exam Pattern.

NCC Certificate holders have the option to appear in the written exam of CDS as they can directly appear in the SSB Interview.   So, here is the detail of CDS syllabus and exam pattern for 2019.

CDS 2019 Exam Pattern

The CDS exam 2019 has two parts; the written test and the Intelligence & Personality Test Interview (SSB Interview).  Candidates need to face 3 written tests for the examination to Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA) and Air Force Academy (AFA). If any candidate wants to go for Officers Training Academy (OTA) then he has to face only two written exams.

CDS 2019 Exam Pattern for OTA

If the applicant wants to appear in the exam for Officers Training Academy (OTA) then he has to clear the papers of English and General Knowledge only. The absence of Mathematics makes the OTA exam easier. Here are the details of the exam pattern for OTA.

Mode of Exam: The mode of exam is offline. The exam is conducted in pen and paper mode.

Number and Types of Questions: The CDS exam for OTA consists of two papers and 120 questions are asked in each paper. The total numbers of questions are 240 for CDS Exam for OTR. The questions asked in the CDS exam are MCQs.

Marking Scheme: Each question in the CDS Written Exam carries 1 mark. For every wrong answer, 1/3 marks get deducted.

CDS 2019 Exam Pattern for IMA, INA, and AFA

The exam of IMA, INA, and AFA has the following three sections; English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics.

Mode of Exam: The exam will be conducted in offline mode.

Number and Types of Questions: the number of questions asked in English and GK is 120 and in Maths, 100 questions are asked. The maximum marks for each subject are 100. The duration for each exam is 2 hours.  

Marking Scheme: For every right answer candidate will score 1 marks and for every incorrect answer, 1/3rd mark will be deducted.

CDS Syllabus 2019 for Mathematics 

In the Mathematics section of CDS exam 2019, the questions are asked from  Algebra, Trigonometry, Arithmetic, mensuration, geometry, and statistics. 

Algebra

Basic Operations, Simple factors, H.C.F., L.C.M., Remainder Theorem, Theory of polynomials, solutions of quadratic equations, the relation between its roots and coefficients. Simultaneous linear inequations in two variables and their solutions. Practical problems leading to two simultaneous linear equations or inequations in two variables or quadratic equations in one variable & their solutions. Set language and set notation, rational expressions, and conditional identities, Laws of indices. 

Trigonometry

Questions from height and Distance, Values of Sin, Cos and Ten at different degrees, Simple trigonometric identities and use of trigonometric tables. 

Arithmetic  

Number System, Integers, Rational and Real numbers. Fundamental operations; addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Square roots, Decimal fractions. Unitary method, time and distance, time and work, percentages, applications to simple and compound interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, variation, Elementary Number Theory-Division algorithm.  Prime and composite numbers. Tests of divisibility by 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 and 11. Multiples and factors. Factorization Theorem. H.C.F. and L.C.M., Euclidean algorithm. Logarithms to base 10, laws of logarithms, use of logarithmic tables. 

Mensuration

Areas of rectangles, triangle, Parallelograms, squares, and circle. Areas of figures which can be split up into these figures (Field Book), Surface area and volume of cuboids, lateral surface and volume of right circular cones and cylinders, surface area and volume of spheres. 

Geometry

Important theorem, Plane and plane figures, Lines and angles.

Statistics 

 Tabulation of statistical data, Graphical representation frequency polygons, histograms, bar charts, pie charts etc and Measures of central tendency.

 CDS Syllabus 2019 for English

In English Exam questions related to Reading Comprehension, Fill in the Blanks, Spotting Errors, Antonyms, Synonyms, Sentence improvement, etc are asked.

 CDS Syllabus 2019 for General Knowledge

The CDS syllabus 2019 for GK exam includes the current affairs, Defence related news, Environment, cultural, physics, Economics, Politics, History, Geography, Biology Chemistry, and awards etc are asked. To prepare for Gk part you can trust the books like Manorama Yearbook 2018 and Lucent’s General Knowledge.
