The word Laureus is derived from the Greek language, which signifies the traditional winning symbol of athletes. the award is given by Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which was established in 1999. the first Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony was held in the year 2000. in the last 20 years, the award has earned a reputation, and it increased a healthy competition among the sportspersons to perform well and get the award.
A Laureus Nominations Panel vote to award the sports personalities in different categories. the panel has more than 1000 members from 70 different countries. Sports personalities in the following categories get the award according to the panel’s vote;
