Government has put a ban on 59 popular Chinese apps over security reasons this year in June, including TikTok, UC Browser and CamScanner. In its next step on July 23, the ministry took down mirror applications that were working despite the ban. On 2nd September 2020, in its third round of ban, the ministry has banned 118 mobile apps, including the very popular online multiplayer shooting game, PUBG. Government has said that the app banned are “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity” of the country.
The app ban is imposed by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) under the provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009. The move comes amid the renewed tensions between India and China over the Line of Actual Control.
The press statement released by the IT Ministry said that the ban on the apps was imposed after receiving “many complaints from various sources including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India.”
If you still have any of these 118 mobile apps in your mobile phone, uninstall it right away as these will no longer work. The apps are:
