To motivate the talented students to gain higher education the government of India has launched many scholarship programs. Government is running these scholarship programmes under the ownership of different ministries.

Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students

Department of Higher Education owned by the Ministry of Human Resources Development has the responsibility to run this program smoothly under the central government of India.  This scheme is in working mode since 2008. W.E.F. 1.1.2013 the Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students has disbursed the scholarship directly into the bank account of the beneficiaries.

Objective

The main aim of Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship is to financially support the talented students. This scheme is for those students whose family income is less than 6 lakhs per year.

In many cases, the bright students are forced to leave their studies to earn money. Many other students choose to take up part-time jobs to bear their expenses.  So the authorities have launched the central sector scheme in order to help a student study hassle-free.

Scope

As per the plan of central sector scheme of scholarship, every year 82,000, 12th passed out students (41,000 boys and 41,000 girls) should get the benefits of this scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to the students for pursuing in their gradations, post graduations, or any technical or non-technical courses.

Allocation of scholarship

The central sector scheme of scholarship is distributed among all the states based on the student population of 18-25 years in them. If any state has less population of citizens belong to the age group of 18-25, it will receive less number of scholarships.

The scholarship is distributed among the science, commerce and humanities streams in the ratio of 3:2:1.

Eligibility for scholarship

A student must be above the 80th percentile of successful candidates in the relevant stream from the respective Board of Examination in Class 12th and pursuing a regular course from a recognized university can be benefited by this scheme.

To be beneficiary of central sector scheme of scholarship the annual income of student’s family should not be more than 6 lakhs and the student must not be getting any other scholarship. To prove the family income candidate will have to show the income certificate only once.

If a student belongs to a reserved category then he/she will get the benefit of reserved quota based on merit.

The benefits

At the graduation level, the student will get Rs. 10,000/- per year as his/her scholarship amount.   For Post graduation level, the student will be eligible to get the amount Rs. 20,000/- per year.

For five year courses the same process will continue but for the courses like B.Tech students would get the scholarship up to graduation level.

Required documents

Here is a list of required documents to apply for the scholarship.

  • Aadhaar Card (in absence of Aadhaar card Aadhaar enrollment ID slip, voter ID card, driving license, PAN, passport etc. can be used)
  • Domicile
  • Class 12th mark sheet
  • Income certificate
