Courses to be a chef

You need to start your journey after 10+2 to be a chef. After your 10+2 (in any stream) you need to appear in the entrance exam of hotel management and choose a college of your choice. There are 19 colleges registered under the National Council of Hotel Management to provide the training to be a chef. Institutes under National Council of Hotel Management offers 3 years course in this specialization.

Apart of these institutes, there are few other institutes run by famous hotel chains, private institutes and foreign affiliated institutes that provide quality education in the field of hotel management and kitchen management. The course duration in these institutes is 4 years.

Admission process

To be a part of the hotel management industry as a chef you need to score 60% marks in 10+2 and clear the entrance exam of hotel management. The hotel management entrance exam has topics related to English, Reasoning, General Science and General Knowledge. This written exam is followed by a group discussion. This entrance exam is held in the month of April and May. In July the education session of hotel management courses starts.

Course details

To become a chef you need to focus on kitchen specialization. Hotel management courses offer the training in the well-known hotels so that students can understand the actual working in the hotels and their kitchens.

Salary of a chef

The journey to be a chef starts from the training period. During the training period, the trainee gets the stipend of Rs. 7,000/- to 10,000/- pm. This amount can be varying according to the training place.

After training another designation a future chef gets is Officer. The salary range for this job profile is Rs 12,000/- to 18,000/-. After gaining some experience as an officer, now you are ready to be a chef. The salary range for this designation also depends on the place you work. Usually, the chef gets salary Rs. 18,000/- to 30,000/- pm.

The executive and successful chefs get the salary up 1 lakh and more.
