Nirmala Sitharaman, Indian Union Commerce and Industry Minister, has launched an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Enforcement Toolkit for Police. The toolkit will act as a ready reckoner for all state police departments across the nation.
The toolkit will be provided to all police departments of states of the country to help them in dealing with crimes related to Trademarks and Copyrights infringements.
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Enforcement Toolkit: Key Features
- The toolkit has been developed by a collaboration of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and Cell for Intellectual Property Right Promotion & Management (CIPAM).
- CIPAM is nodal agency which functions under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry’s Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).
- The IPR Enforcement toolkit will help police officials nationwide in dealing with cases relating to Intellectual Property rights infringement, precisely Trade Marks forging and Copyrights piracy.
- The toolkit will also provide details of crimes under various laws, along with checklists to register complaint and to conduct search and seizure of crimes relating to IPR.
Measures Taken by CIPAM to strengthen India’s IP Ecosystem
- CIPAM been working to ensure effective implementation and execution of the National IPR Policy 2016.
- The National IPR Policy 2016 recognizes that awareness about Intellectual property rights (IPRs) and respecting IPRs is vital for country’s healthy IP ecosystem.
- CIPAM has organized a three day IPR training programme for Police Officials and APOs in Uttar Pradesh and seven batches of IPR training for Police officials in Andhra Pradesh, to strengthen the enforcement mechanism.
- CIPAM has also asked all the state judicial and police academies to undertake training of judicial and police officers on Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights.
- CIPAM has been actively facilitating International Intellectual Property Rights engagements. It has signed two memorandum of understanding (MoU) on IPRs with Singapore and United Kingdom.
