The medical sector is one of the most popular service sectors throughout the world. In India also, almost 10 lakh students every year appear for the entrance test for undergraduate courses related to the medical field. Maintenance of public health comes under the subjects of center, state as well as the local governments. Still, the public healthcare system of the country remains poor and people mostly flock to the private healthcare units. Lack of doctors, improper infrastructure and the inadequate medical staff is a big problem in the public healthcare department. According to a study merely 2% of the entire rural population, which is almost 50-60% of the entire population of the country, has proper medical facilities available to them in their vicinity. These loopholes indicate the urgent need for a skilled medical mechanism in public healthcare in this country and hence provide a plethora of opportunities for young medical undergraduates and graduates in the government sector. Here are listed some medical jobs available in the government sector.

DOCTORS

The central government conducts an examination every year for engaging and hiring medical doctors to various posts under its ambit. The usual posts offered are of Assistants in Railways to the Medical officer of the Division, medical experts in municipal corporations and municipal council of Delhi and many junior level posts in the Health services controlled by the center. Almost 350+ aspirants are filled in every year through this exam. Other than these regular vacancies in various state and center run hospitals for multiple experts like pediatrician, ophthalmologist, gynecologist etc. keep occurring and are filled in by the particular departments of that hospital.

NURSING

A very sought after job in the medical field is that of the nursing (both male and female). For being a nurse in the government-run hospitals one needs to have at least one of the curses among B.Sc Nursing, a master’s in Nursing or a diploma. Other than this the GNM and ANM ( the general and auxiliary Midwifery) courses are also acceptable. Every year a notification regarding the number of vacancies available in various government hospitals for staff nurses is published and those interested can apply.

LAB TECHNICIAN

Every hospital is equipped with proper medical labs for research and other purposes and for its working a lab technician is essential. For being a lab technician in a state-run hospital one should at least have passed his class 12 with science subjects and hold a diploma or a B.Sc in medical laboratory technology from a recognized university.The candidate is also expected to have a year’s experience at any medical laboratory certified by NABL. These posts are filled in by the hospitals on their individual basis.

 PHARMACIST

A very important aspect of a public hospital is the distribution of medicines and for this trained individuals who have proper knowledge of drugs are roped in by the government. For this purpose, the government releases every year an official notification regarding the vacancies of the pharmacist in its various hospitals. The qualification required is B.Sc, Bachelors or Masters in Pharmacy or any such qualification.

Other than these above-mentioned jobs, jobs of physiotherapist, nutritionist, clinical researchers etc. are also available and people with proper qualifications can apply for such posts.
