Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony is conducted once a year to appreciate the sports players and honouring them and the team. Like every year, this year also the sportspersons and their fans are waiting for the award night. But Laureus World Sports Awards 2021 is going to be different as it will be conducted virtually. Due to the epidemic, the organizers have announced that they will arrange the award ceremony virtually. 

 Laureus World Sports Awards are given in the following six categories; Sportswoman, Sportsman, Team, Breakthrough, Comeback and Action. The reputation of the award is so high that its also known as the Oscars of Sports. The awards all offered to the sports players with incredible talent, hard work and inspiring stories.

Sportsman and woman give their sweat and blood to their sport to win or get defeated by a better one. It can be one of the best ways to inspire youngsters to participate in different sports. Laureus World Sports Awards

The word Laureus is derived from the Greek language, which signifies the traditional winning symbol of athletes. the award is given by Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which was established in 1999. the first Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony was held in the year 2000. in the last 20 years, the award has earned a reputation, and it increased a healthy competition among the sportspersons to perform well and get the award. 

A Laureus Nominations Panel vote to award the sports personalities in different categories. the panel has more than 1000 members from 70 different countries. Sports personalities in the following categories get the award according to the panel’s vote;

  • Laureus World Sportsman of the Year
  • Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year
  • Laureus World Team of the Year
  • Laureus World Comeback of the Year
  • Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year
  • Laureus Action Sportsperson of the Year

International Paralympic Committee also gives the nominations for the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability award. The winner of Laureus Best Sporting Moment of the Year is based on the public vote. Following Laureus awards fall in the category of discretionary awards;

  • Sport for Good Award
  • Spirit of Sport Award
  • Exceptional Achievement Award
  • Sporting Inspiration Award

 Facts About Laureus World Sports Awards

  • The first Laureus World Sports Awards were held in 2000 in Monaco.
  • IN 2009, the award ceremony was not conducted due to the economic crisis. the awards were given to the sports personalities in different events. 
  • The awards are also criticized due to not availability of clear criteria to give the award.  
  • The Laureus World Sports Academy members also vote for the sports personalities in the different group, but they vote through a secret ballot.

  • One of the nominated members that get the highest votes announced the winner.  
  • Roger Federer holds the record for receiving the most Laureus Awards. He has a total of five awards so far. 
  • Chris Nikic, the first person with Down’s Syndrome to complete a full Ironman, received the Laureus Sporting Moment of the Year award. He received most of the votes under this category. 
  • Sachin Tendulkar is the first sportsperson from India that won the Laureus World Sports Award for Laureus Sporting Moment Award (2000-2020).
